Diverse in background, united in purpose,
vital to the NHS

SAS stands for Specialist, Associate Specialist, and Specialty Doctor — a vital and evolving part of the NHS medical workforce. SAS doctors are a diverse and dynamic community. We bring a wide range of experience, perspectives, and strengths to patient care:

  • Some of us are highly experienced clinicians, while others are at the start of a different kind of medical journey.

  • We are UK graduates, international medical graduates, and returners to practice.

  • We reflect the diversity of the communities we serve — across ethnicity, gender, age, religion, and disability.

  • Many of us bring lived experience of neurodivergence or non-traditional career paths.

  • What we share is a commitment to delivering excellent care, every day.

SAS doctors work in every specialty and setting across the NHS. We lead services, supervise colleagues, drive innovation, and provide continuity where it’s needed most.

With the right support and recognition, SAS doctors have the potential to become senior autonomous clinicians, educators, leaders, and system influencers. We are not in waiting; we are already contributing — and we are ready to do more.

The #SASsix campaign exists to champion that potential and demand a future where SAS doctors are seen, valued, and supported to thrive.
